Imphal, August 27 2022:
A team of Loktak Development Authority (LDA) led by its chairman M Asni-kumar inspected catchment areas of Nambol and Maklang rivers on Saturday for taking up tree plantation and afforestation activities as part of saving the Loktak lake.
LDA scientists, staff and villagers of catchment areas accompanied the LDA chairman during the inspection visit.
On the sidelines of the inspection, M Asnikumar told media persons that support of local people is very important in the protection of catchment area as LDA staff alone cannot protect catchment areas, rivers and Loktak lake.
According to Asnikumar, success of catchment treatment programmes and bringing improvement in catchment areas would not be possible without the support of local people and sacrifices of LDA staff while maintaining that catchment area treatment is the most important thing for saving Loktak lake and its associated wetlands.
Beginning from the year 1996-97, around 70 villages have been identified as Loktak catchment areas and catchment area treatment work is currently being undertaken jointly with 48 villages.
Afforestation, added generation, cultural operation of plant and tree activities are being taken up in these villages as also water harvesting scheme, pisciculture, banana plantation, pineapple plantation, poultry and piggery scheme, bamboo plantation and handloom activities.
During the inspection, M Asnikumar and scientists of LDA interacted with villagers of the catchment areas and discussed their problems.
Asnikumar appealed to villagers to shoulder responsibility in protection of forest and prevent forest fire.
On the other hand, villagers appealed to LDA tp help them in improving their livelihood means.
