Adult Education Department Secretary Mongjam Joy has claimed that Manipur currently holds the 12th spot in the literacy scale of the country.
Speaking to media persons at DIPR's office complex at Moirangkhom today, M Joy said that based on the 2011 census report, Manipur holds the 12th position in literacy rate across the country.
Around 70.50 percent of the State's population was calculated as literate in 2001, and by 2011, the figure had climbed to 79.50 percent.
And in the context of the whole country, the figure had climbed from 65.10 percent in 2001 to 74.04 in 2011 meaning that the State has been ahead of the National average, he added.
The Department has been taking up various projects of Adult Education in the State under Saakshan Bharat (Literate India) Mission which was launched in 2009.In 2010, the projects were taken up at Chandel, Senapati, Tamenglong and Thoubal districts.
There are total of 321 Adult Education Centres (AEC) in the State out of which 59 are in Chandel, 142 in Senapati, 56 in Tamenglong and 64 in Thoubal.
A total of 20 AECs have been transformed into Model AEC, he added.
The secretary pointed out that the AEC is aimed at functional basic literacy apart from vocational training (skill development) and continuing education.
Till March last year, 13,028 people of Chandel were provided functional basic literacy out of the 14,616 targeted figure, 30,668 in Senapati (out of a targeted 40,283 people), 10,928 in Tamenglong (out of 11,474) and 34,260 in Thoubal (out of 34,510).Replying to a query, State Literacy Mission Authority Nodal Officer A Romeo said that Saakshan Bharat Mission will conclude this March but the National Literacy Mission Authority is planning other steps to ensure 100 percent literacy rate across the country by 2020 .
Mobile based internet platforms, e-books, video lectures, digital literacy aids etc and various other advanced methods may even be utilised in the new projects/schemes, Romeo added.
