Imphal, September 20 2021:
Lamlai Mapari Thougal Lup has opined that crop production in Lamlai AC will reduce tremendously this year.
In a release, general secretary Laishram Bobishana informed that a team of the Lup and agricultural experts of E-Loumi led by political activist Sapam Kangleipal inspected the condition of farmlands in Lamlai AC.
More than 25 per Cent of the agricultural land in Lamlai AC remains barren while more than 30 per cent of the land will not yield crops and production in 15 per cent might be drastically low this year.
Only 30 per cent of the agricultural land in Lamlai AC will produce crops, he said, while adding that overall crop yield for this year will be unprecedentedly low.
Bobishana further said that the farmers are worried as an insect 'Nematode' has been infesting the crops due to drying up of water in agricultural land.
If farmers have to till the soil for cultivation of crops, the insect would spread and could even infect the next cultivation season.
As such, there is the urgent need to spray insecticide to kill the insect before tilling the soil for the next cultivation, he added.
Pointing out that political activist Kangleipal has ensured benefits of alternative farming to more than 200 households, Bobishana stressed the need to plant alternative crops in 30 per cent of the agricultural land in Lamlai.
The inspection visit to farm lands was accompanied by social worker Laishram Raghumani among others.
