Road blocked after man dies in quarrel

Imphal, August 20 2021:
In connection with the death of a man during a quarrel over a vehicle overtaking issue at Ngariyan area under Andro police station on August 15, enraged protesters on Friday blocked the Imphal-Yairipok road for some hours demanding justice.
The deceased person has been identified as Hidam Rojit (33) s/o Tomba of Langdum Makha Leikai.
He was an employee of Jio Mobile Internet Service Company.
Meanwhile, police have arrested an accused person in connection with the case, who has been identified as Loitongbam Somokanta (53) of Angtha Mamang Leikai.
According to a police report, on August 15, Rojit along with three of his friends went to Andro regarding an installation of a Jio tower in the area.
On their way back, they got into a fight with a group near Ngariyan Chingkhong over a vehicle passing.
Rojit and his friends subsequently left the area and were eating pineapple at Ngariyan Keithel, when the group arrived and started quarreling with them.
During the quarrel, Rojit was hit on the head with a blunt object and as such, was taken to Advanced Hospital for treatment.
His condition worsened and he succumbed to his injuries around 9 pm Thursday.
In connection with the death, a public meeting was convened on Friday morning and a JAC was formed.
The newly formed JAC then proceeded to block the Imphal-Yairipok road demanding arrest of the persons responsible.
On receiving news of the blockade, a team of Imphal East District Police arrived at the scene and talked with the JAC to withdraw the rock blockade.
Later, after receiving news that an accused person involved in the case had been arrested by the police, the protesters called off the road blockade by 9am Thursday.
On the other hand, the JAC has cautioned of staging intense protests if the government fails to take up strict legal action on the matter.
