Capacity building prog for PLVs held

Imphal, January 19 2022: Under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, Tamenglong organised an online capacity building programme oh Sexual harassment of Women at Workplace' for para-legal volunteers (PLVs) of Tamenglong and Noney districts on Wednesday.

Delivering the key note address, Imphal West district and sessions judge cum DLSA Tamenglong chairman Aribam Guneshwor said that previously there was no specific legislation for protection of women from sexual harassment in India.

When victim lodged complaints regarding such cases, actions were taken up as per provisions under IPCs related to such offence, he pointed out.

The Supreme Court of India later passed judgement for ensuring gender equality in workplace and taken up actions against sexual harassment.

Subsequently, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Provision, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 was passed and implemented, he added.

Royal Academy of Law, Oinam assistant professor Nongthombam Mina said that the Act encompasses all women employees irrespective of age or place of work and the definition of sexual harassment includes physical contact, signs and language, showing pornography and any other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature.

She also explained the responsibilities of PLVs on making the people aware about the Act thoroughly.
