CADA criticises liquor policy, bemoans crisis

Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) has criticised the state government's stand to accord importance in convening a cabinet meeting to legalise liquor but hesitating to allot time for discussions on addressing the ongoing crisis, despite repeated appeals for action.
Speaking at the 18th foundation day celebration of CADA held at its Pureiromba Khongnang Makhong conference hall, here, on Wednesday, president Hijam Priyokumar highlighted the Coalition's relentless campaigns against sale and use of drugs' and liquor since 2006 .
He informed that apart from prioritising prevention of substance abuse, CADA has also been actively involved as and when sensitive issues grip the state as could be comprehended from prime activities of CADA put on hold in view of the Current unrest situation.
Priyokumar also said that without specific government actions to combat drug use and other intoxicants, future generations risk being entrapped in the drug epidemic, which could ultimately dilute sense of nationalism, as experienced in histories of various countries.
While asking the government to initiate effective steps to control the menace of drugs in the state, he also clarified that regardless of CADA staunchly opposed to the policy of legalising liquor, it decided not to react for the time being considering the challenges and hardships ensured by the public amid the crisis.
Stating that CADA is aware that any agitation regarding other issues at this time could be distractive, he, however, disclosed about CADA planning to take action against the legalisation of liquor at an appropriate time and place.
The president also urged the public to extend support to the initiatives taken up by CADA and ensure that the state is free from drugs and alcohol.
The function was also attended by UCM president YK Dhiren, United People's Front (UPF) president N Rupachandra, NIPCO president Oinam Premjit, MAPI Council president KC Romio and All Manipur Progressive Farmer's Association president Konthoujam Thoiba as presidium members.
Attendees at the event offered floral tributes to the photo of former CADA advisor N Joychandra as a mark of respect to the departed soul along with observing 2-minute silence in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for upholding the emotional and territorial integrity of Manipur.
