RIMS hosts observance of World Plastic Surgery Day

The Department of Plastic Surgery, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal organised World Plastic Surgery Day under the theme "Surgical Advancement in Plastic Surgery: The Latest Innovations and Recent Trends" at the RIMS Banting Hall on Monday in collaboration with Rotary Club of Imphal.
The observance was held with Shija Hospitals CMD Dr Khundongbam Palin as chief guest and RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma as president, while RIMS MS Prof N Sanjib Singh and Rotary Club of Imphal president Saratchandra Singh Phijam were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Palin highlighted the importance of Plastic Surgery, progress made in the last three decades in the field and prospects for further advancement through sharing knowledge and experience of various treatment procedures.
Stating that plastic surgery is now defined as a problem-solving surgical discipline and does not have a denned anatomic area unlike other super specialties and treats both sexes with no limitation on age, he opined that the observance is aimed at causing awareness about the diverse and impactful work of plastic surgeons beyond cosmetic procedures.
People generally do believe that plastic surgery deals only with 'beauty and glamour' and monopoly of 'rich and famous' which is no longer true.
It can restore forms and functions of body parts and can be lifesaving.
Self-esteem of an individual can be increased through plastic surgery.
Anti-aging sciences are emerging as the most wanted human innovation of the century, elaborated Dr Palin, while commending Department of Plastic Surgery, RIMS, for organising such an important event for awareness the region of the people.
In his address, Prof Sunil Kumar Sharma noted role of Department of Plastic Surgery in serving the people of not only Manipur but the whole north east region.
He announced that patients of post-burn deformities present at the observance function will be given all assistance in treatment in near future.
Adding further, he commended the work done and contributions made by Rotarians in helping the public under different projects.
The director also mentioned that Manipur is lucky to have maximum plastic surgeries in north east and called upon all to stay healthy by managing time in physical work out.
During the programme, aids were distributed to burn beneficiaries under the theme of "Restore life after Burn" and an "Information Bulletin" released.
The programme was also attended by RIMS deputy director (Admin) RK Mecolt Singh, principals of RIMS Dental College and College of Nursing, RIMS, heads of departments, nursing officials, faculties and staff of RIMS.
