Imphal, July 13 2021:
YAS minister Letpao Haokip laid the foundation stone for an eco-tourism destination project at Lonpinu Gamvet Mol under Lonpi village in Chandel district on Sunday afternoon.
To be set up at a total cost of Rs 50 lakh, the project is jointly sponsored by Letpao, who is the local MLA, and the Department of Tourism.
Speaking during the event, minister Letpao noted that Lonpinu Gamvet Mol has a very scenic landscape and climbing the hill till its top offers a 360 degree aerial view of the various parts of Manipur including Churachandpur, Ukhrul and the central plains, and also the Myanmar side.
What is more interesting is the historical significance that the place has during the time of the Seven Years' Devastation War.
As stated by the minister, the then Manipuri king Gambhir Singh came up to this hill during the war and along with the village chief of Lonpi declared that the Manipuri territory will be till what the eyes could see towards Burma from this hill.
As a result of this, the hill is also known as 'Lamyeng Ching', he added.
The new tourist destination at Lonpi, also called as Monpi, will have four lodging houses and one long dormitory to cater to the needs of the visitors and for allowing night stay facilities.
For ensuring smooth and safe trekking till the top for visitors of all ages, a staircase with one-sided railing for support will be constructed at the earliest.
Regarding the management, the minister said it will be handled on a public-private-partnership basis.
