Fitting tributes paid to Subedar Niranjan Chhetri

Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), Manipur State Branch observed the 131st Saheed Diwas of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri at Kanglatongbi on Wednesday.
In a release, BGP MSB general secretary Dewan Kumar Chhetry said that the observance was attended by Khurkhul Zilla Parishad member Angom Bikram Singh, BGP MSB president Laxuman Bista and Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat pradhan Meena Bista as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The programme mas marked by paying of floral tributes to the statue of Niranjan Chhetri, who was the personal bodyguard of Yubraj Tikendrajit and was hanged on June 8,1891 at the Western Gate of Kangla on the charge of waging war against the British colonial power, it added.
The release mehtioned that Ghanashyam Acharya, who wrote a book 'Saheed Niranjan Singh Chhetri: The unsung hero of Anglo-Manipuri (Khongjom) War, 1891 with a perspective on contributions and historical settlement of Gorkhas in Manipur' highlighted the brief history of Niranjan Chhetri and informed that he (Niranjan) was the first Indian Gorkha to be hanged by the British.
On the other hand, BGP MSB president Laxuman Bis-ta reiterated the demand for declaring June 8 as restricted holiday for Gorkha community in the state and also for construction of a memorial statue of Saheed Niranjan Chhetri at a suitable location by the state government, while A Bikram assured of constructing a Gorkha Museum by donating his own land.
BGP MSB further conveyed that the function was also attended by Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union, Nepali Sahitya Parishad, All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union, All Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Association, Manipuri Gorkha Youth Association, Kanglatongbi Gorkha Youth Association and various other Gorkha CSOs, clubs, women societies, social workers, intellectuals, village and community leaders.
