National Handloom Day observed

Department of Commerce, Manipur Govt under the aegis of Weavers Service Centre of Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India organised the National Handloom Day on Friday at the conference hall of Imphal Hotel, North AOC.
National Handloom Day is observed on this day across the country to recall the decision to use only the Indian-made commodities by challenging the British, said Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam who attended the function as chief guest.
The minister reminded that before this observation, Manipur started marking State Handloom Day since 2002 under the Commerce and Industries Department, Govt of Manipur and Handloom Promotion Council Manipur.
Explaining the vast scope of handloom sector, the minister said that handloom activities in the State have been a means of living for a long time.
While adding that traditional weaving looms can be found in every household of Manipur, the minister said that globalization and civilization cannot replace the traditional handloom activities by any other ways.
The minister expressed his intention for giving support to weavers and handloom workers, including cotton planters, but cited the failure on the part of the weavers to repay their loans which often results in denial of further loans from the banks.
The Centre has been continuously providing monetary aids to promote handloom products in the State since Manipur has a large number of women weavers, said the minister.
While promising to inaugurate one Handloom and Handicrafts Development Cooperation Centre soon, the minister also added that Manipur Govt has been focusing on the handloom and handicrafts of the State, which will be continued in future.
