Fishermen cards distributed at Thanga event

Over 600 fishermen were provided with fisherman cards at an awareness programme held at Haoreng Chingang community hall, Thanga-I on Saturday, The programme organised by Department of Fisheries in collaboration with Sinheibi Development Organisation was attended by LDA chairman M Asnikumar, district fishery officer Elangbam Rameshwor, Thanga ZP former member N Dinesh, and ICMR former deputy director Dr N Yaima.
The fisherman cards, issued under the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) and recognised by the Government of India, offer benefits such as free life insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh and access to welfare schemes under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY) .

In his address, Asnikumar emphasised the government's commitment to the welfare of fishing communities, stating that both the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state government under chief minister N Biren are dedicated to ensuring sustainable growth and prosperity for the fishing communities.
He elaborated on how PM-MKSSY is revolutionising the fisheries sector by providing access to institutional financing for small and micro-enterprises, offering aquaculture insurance, and ensuring fish Safety and quality.
The scheme aims to empower fishing communities with a safety net against challenges while fostering growth in the sector through technological advancements and institutional reforms.
Asnikumar also lauded the department of fisheries and Sinheibi Development Organisation for their continued efforts in uplifting fishing communities.
As a part of the programme participated by community leaders, women, and members of fishing communities, the government's vision of transforming the fisheries sector into'a sustainable and prosperous industry was highlighted by the speakers.
