Imphal, December 05 2024:
Students of Dhanamanjuri University staged a sit-in protest in front of die varsity's A-Block today demanding election of the students' union.
A student who took part in the protest demonstration said the election of the students' union for academic session 2023-24 was not held, and the election for the academic session 2024-25 has not been held even after the due date has passed.
As authorities concerned are not seen taking up any step to conduct the election, students may launch intense agitation from tomorrow.
The students may launch a hunger strike and shut the university, he said.
Repeated appeals have been to the authorities including the Education Minister, Vice Chancellor, Registrar and others.
However, no visible steps have been taken up to conduct the elections yet, he added.
Recently, the students were not allowed to meet the Vice Chancellor which is unfortunate.
The presence of a working student union is needed for the varsity to function properly and address the needs of the student community.
The absence of a working student union has proven to be detrimental to the welfare of the students and the varsity as a whole, said the student.
The students have earlier urged the Chief Minister and the Education Minister to hold the election by December 10 .
However, no actions have been taken up yet to conduct the election, he added.
