Imphal, July 03 2013:
Speakers at a public session on 'protection of Moirang culture and heritage sites' organised by Senior Citizens for Society, Moirang AC Chapter at Moirang Yumkhaibam Mandap today raised strong objections against the Government of Manipur's plan to develop a parking lot at Moirang Kangla, located opposite to the IN A Memorial Complex.
The day-long session .
was attended and addressed by CPI State secretary Dr M Nara.Singh, Senior Citizens for Society president N Binoy, Society's secretary L Sadananda, joint secretary K Achouba and IAS (Retd) P Saratchandra.
Highlighting historical relevance of the spot where the parking project is being planned, the speakers recommended that the said location be developed as a heritage site and the parking lot constructed at an alternative site.
Opining that no development work should supersede history of Manipur, they also strongly questioned wisdom of digging a large pond at the site when the project is actually meant for parking vehicles.
Claiming that the locals were heither informed about the parking project nor consulted on the project set to dilute history of Moirang.
the speakers said the locals deserve to have detailed information about the project such as its estimated cost, whom the contract had been allotted and under which department the project is to be executed.
Until and unless transparency is ensured the project would be staunchly resisted by the people, the public session resolved.
