CM Biren's Sanaleibak dream unrealistic: Ch Bijoy

Imphal, September 02 2022: Socio-political commentator Ch Bijoy has said that it would be a difficult task for the chief minister N Biren-led government to realise the dream for transforming Manipur into Sanaleibak (land of jewel) as could be comprehended from the performance and claimed achievement of the 160 days old government.

In an interaction with some media persons at his Lamphel residence on Friday, Ch Bijoy said that chief minister N Biren had in his first term promised to make Manipur 'Sanaleibak' if the people give their mandate to BJP in the assembly election.

Eventually, BJP emerged majority in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election and the BJP government in the state is now more than 160 days old.

However, it would be difficult task to convert Manipur into Sanaleibak if one assesses performance and achievement of the government in the past 160 days, he said, adding that stopping drug business and corruption, nabbing vehicle lifters and controlling law & order are normal duty of a government and cannot be considered as achievement.

According to Ch Bijoy, the strong sentiment among the Meetei community over apprehension of being reduced to a minority in their own land has many reasons with unrestrained corruption one main reason coupled with failure of the government to perform its duties well in every aspect due to corruption.

As per the India Innovative Index (III) prepared by the Niti Aayog, Manipur has cent percent backlog of corruption cases and stands last among states in submission of charge sheet in corruption related cases.

This indicates that government does not want to uproot corruption.

In his first term, chief minister N Biren opened an anti-corruption cell which started functioning with a bang but ended silently without any significant achievement, he claimed, adding that the government should have booked all those involved in disproportionate asset Cases if it was really interested in stopping corruption.

The CM Biren-led government's 'War on Drug' campaign seems to be carrying out properly but requires a thorough investigation on how drugs originated from Manipur are being seized in other states and loopholes must be identified.

He also said that the chief minister should disclose the present status of those arrested with drugs as people of the state are yet to forget the CM's remark that those arrested with drugs would be lodged in jail for at least one year without giving bail.

While lauding efforts being made by the government to stop poppy cultivation and providing alternative means of livelihood to poppy farmers under the keen initiative of the chief minister, the former BJP spokesperson suggested that identifying poppy cultivated area with aerial survey and subsequent aerial spraying of herbicide could give a big psychological impact to poppy cultivators.

While expressing concern over degrading education sector in the state and mismanagement in urea distribution, Bijoy said that CM Biren would not have seen the right path when he disclosed the desire of converting Manipur into a model state in India and the state could become a leading model state only when entire abled bodied people of Manipur are engaged in manufacturing activities.
