Imphal, August 02 2024:
During Zero Hour of the ongoing Lok Sabha session on Friday, Inner Manipur MP Prof Bimol Akoijam drew the attention of union minister of health and family welfare for elevating Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The Congress MP from Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency highlighted the critical role RIMS has been playing in the healthcare sector of the region and its potential to further contribute if recognised as an institute of national importance.
Prof Bimol emphasised that RIMS, a 52-year-old institution, has been instrumental in producing many healthcare professionals, who are serving not only in different parts of India but also abroad.
He also pointed out that the medical institute caters to patients from neighbouring states as well as international patients from countries like Myanmar.
The MP stressed that upgrading RIMS to an AIIMS would significantly enhance the region's healthcare infrastructure and contribute to the state's economic development.
He also underscored the importance of addressing the mental health needs of the Northeastern region, which has been affected by decades of conflict and rapid urbanisation along with pointing out that the ongoing crisis in Manipur is also related to drug-related issues, with many youths falling victim to this menace.
To address these challenges, Prof Bimol urged the health minister to establish a centrally-run mental health hospital and institute in the state.
In his appeal, Prof Bimol stressed the urgency of these initiatives, highlighting potential positive impact on both the health and economic sectors of the state.
He expressed hope that the health minister would take prompt action to address these pressing needs.
