CCpur, December 01 2024:
Churachandpur commemorated World AIDS Day 2024 here on Sunday during which chief guest of the observance function, Dr Kimneihlam, District Leprosy Officer, emphasised the importance of raising awareness about HIV prevention and honouring those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.
She noted that while individuals living with HIV/AIDS were historically reluctant to disclose their status due to stigma, increased awareness has significantly reduced societal discrimination.
As a result, more individuals are now coming forward for diagnosis and treatment, making it easier to identify cases and provide timely care, she said: Dr Kimneihlam also highlighted that adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial, enabling those affected to lead longer, healthier lives.
Earlier in the programme, Dr Romeo Sanate, in his welcome address, shared key statistics about HIV/AIDS in the country.
He reported that the total number of HIV/AIDS cases in Churachandpur exceeds 28,000, while the national figure for India stands at approximately 400,000 .
As of October 2024, there are 3,103 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Churachandpur, including 520 drug users.
The event also featured testimonials from individuals living with HIV who shared their experiences with treatment adherence and its positive outcomes.
