Imphal, June 30 2022:
Shija Academy of Health Sciences (SAHS) director Dr M Amuba has said that stem cell therapy could replace organ transplantation in patients suffering from organ damage or failure.
Speaking at a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme organised by the Academy's department of biochemistry under the theme 'Current trends on stem cells and regenerative medicine' at the academy's lecture hall on Thursday, Dr Amuba explained that stem cell can be used to regenerate damaged cells and it offers possibilities of regenerating damaged organs instead of transplant.
Stating that it is part of the regenerative medicine, he also informed that the CME programme is part of awareness activities to introduce such treatment technology at Shija Hospital.
In organ transplant, one may find it impossible to find a donor or may wait for long to get one.
However, one can easily get stem cell with which the damaged organs could be regenerated.
Though it might take some time, it requires less treatment cost and easy alternative to organ transplant.
There is no lab for extracting stem cells and Shija Hospital is planning to introduce this technology in the state, he said.
Shija Hospitals and Research Institute managing director Dr Palin Khundongbam and other doctors of the Academy also attended the programme.
