Minister S Ranjan bats for drug-free state

Meritorious students and sportspersons residing in areas under Konthoujam and Yurembam gram panchayats in Konthoujam assembly constituency were felicitated on Saturday at separate functions held at Yurembam Awang Leikai and Konthoujam Kangjeibung community hall respectively.
Speaking as chief guest at the Yurembam Awang Leikai programme organised by Yurembam Development Club (YDC) health minister and local MLA Dr S Ranjan Singh stressed the need to instil sense of patriotism and national among the students through proper education.
While observing that felicitation of meritorious students with presentation of award and words of encourage will inspire the future pillars of the society strive for excellence in academic as well as prepare for the challenges ahead, the minister also stated that contemporary students need to get acquainted with history of Manipur and acknowledge the role played by our freedom fighters for the future generations.
"Remembering and honouring our patriots and following in their foot-steps are the duties of the citizens.
Their sacrifices and ideologies should be respected," minister maintained.
He also said that as the government has been taking up various measures for bringing development in all sectors, public cooperation is essential to achieve the objectives.
Environment and climate change has also become a challenge for which we all need to come out and take firm stand to maintain the fragile ecological balance, he added.
Among others, the function was also attended by YDC president Dr L Sashikumar, Yurembam ZP Th Nilamani Singh and pradhan M Deben Singh.
In his address at a felicitation function held at Konthoujam Kangjeibung community hall, minister Ranjan said that encouraging meritorious students will help to produce more talented students.
He also emphasised on proper career guidance to the students to ensure their successful future.
Sharing his observation that education does not mean only securing high scores in examinations, the minister said students should also be made well aware on importance of patriotism and understand the geo-political situation of the state.
Manipur is culturally a rich state.
We also have a rich tradition which is unique from others.
We need to protect and preserve our rich cultural heritage, he added.
Dr Ranjan also expressed concern over the issue of drug menace in the state and called upon all sections of society to contribute their mite towards eradicating the scourge of substance abuse by lending support to 'War on Drugs' campaign of the present government to save our future.
The event was also attended by Relief and Disaster Management director Daigang Gangmei, NYK former youth coordinator K Kumar Singh, LYS Groups managing partner L Ratan Khuman, Free Progressive Academy, Konthoujam principal N Indrakumar Singh as functional president and guests of honour respectively.
The minister also distributed certificates to the meritorious students and sportspersons of Yurembam and Konthoujam Gram Panchayat as a part of the event.
