20 MT of organic pineapples Dubai bound

Horticulture Minister Letpao Haokip flagged off a consignment of 20 MT of fresh organic pineapple to be exported to Dubai today.
Speaking at the flagging off event at Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) outlet at Sanjenthong, the Minister said the consignment is being exported under the aegis of Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) .
facilitating the export.
He added that Thayong Organic Producer Company Limited is the exporter and Grand Hypermarket in Dubai is the buyer of the said consignment from the State.
The Minister added that as a part of the Horticulture Department's initiative to improve the earnings of farmers, the 20 MT consignment is being exported on a trial basis.
He also said that efforts will be made on making horticultural crops a viable source of income that will help in improving the economy of the State by next year.
As the State is 90 percent hill areas, steps have been taken up from this year onwards to replace less productive crops cultivated in hill areas with more profitable high value crops, Letpao Haokip said.
He also appealed farmers of different districts to take varieties of plants suitable to their land from the district horticulture officers.
Speaking at the event, Additional Chief Secretary (Horticulture and Soil Conservation) P Vaiphei said the consignment that was being flagged off today was a result of demand made by consumers during the seller's and buyer's meet held at Dubai last February.
The 20 MT fresh pineapple which cost around Rs 4 lakh in the domestic market will have a value of around Rs 30 lakh once it reaches Dubai, he added.
He further said that initiatives will be taken up to export fresh produce from the State including King Chilli.
6 organic producer companies including 4 from Churachandpur (Loulhoumi Organic Producer Company Limited, Kapaih Organic Producer Company Limited, Khuga Hills Organic Producer Company Limited and Than Than Organic Producer Company Limited) and one each from Imphal East (Thayong Organic Producer Company Limited) and Kangpokpi (Khawizu Organic Producer Company Limited) supplied the fresh organic pineapple for the consignment.
