Imphal, February 12 2022:
The police department has withdrawn security escort of NCP candidate in Keirao assembly constituency MI Khan for allegedly opening blank fires in a bid to control election related violence.
Meanwhile, decrying withdrawal of escort of the candidate, his workers demanded immediate reinstatement of security escort and transfer of the officer in-charge of Irilbung police station.
Addressing a press meet at the residence of MI Khan on Saturday, Keirao Makting Awang Leikai Women's Development Association secretary Gulsana Begum said that some workers of MI Khan put up party flags on electric poles in Keirao Makting Mayai Leikai area on Friday around 3.30 pm which some NPP workers removed replaced with NPP flags consequently leading to a violent clash between the two sides.
On getting the information, MI Khan came and tried to control the situation.
However, some NPP workers hit his vehicle with stones and sticks.
As the situation turned grave, the security escort of MI Khan fired in the air to control the situation.
Shortly after the incident, additional SP Imphal East and OC of Irilbung PS came and withdrew the security escort of MI Khan, she said while terming the withdrawal of escort as unreasonable.
The secretary further said that the security escort of MI Khan is not related with election.
He was provided escort following a court order considering the threats received from different organisations, she said and demanded the police department to reinstate the security escort at the earliest.
Gulsana Begum informed that police commando teams are visiting the locality frequently and intimidating the public after the incident.
She appealed to the police department to look into the matter.
Later, KMALWDA organised a sit-in protest at Keirao Makting against the withdrawal of security escort of MI Khan.
Interacting with media on the sidelines, Gulsana Begum said that a summon order was served to MI Khan in connection with a false case and they strongly condemned such acts of intimidating the candidate.
