Imphal, July 11 2024:
Announcing that a campaign to submit two-point memorandum to the chief ministers and the 40 MLAs of the valley districts will be initiated from July 14, environmental activist Manikanta Mutum has appealed to the people to extend support and cooperation to the campaign.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday, Manikanta cautioned all concerned that deforestation has severely impacted the state's environment.
The recent consecutive floods in the state should be construed as natural disasters but as human-induced calamities.
Stating that he has planted over 2000 tree saplings both within and outside the state as a part of the endeavour to protect the environment.
The activist conceded that environmental activists cannot save the environment without the involvement of the public.
Therefore, as an initiative to save the environment, a campaign will be launched on July 14, starting at Tula Singh Junior High School in Sekmai under which two-point memorandum will be submitted to the 40 legislators.
The demands include prohibiting appointment of government employees without certificates issued by district forest officers and making tree plantation mandatory for students in all educational institutions to receive grace marks.
He also proposed that the said points be passed by the state assembly.
Manikanta also said that the solo campaign which will be flagged off by Arambai Tenggol chief Korounganba Khuman cannot be fruitful without the support of public.
For the start, the memorandum will be submitted to Sekmai MLA Dingo.
