Imphal, February 11 2015:
Thadou Students Association (TSA) has submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industries Nirmala Sitharaman protesting the proposal for setting up of a smart city at Moreh (Haolenphai) in Chandel district.
In the memorandum, TSA highlights the intense outcry of the residents against the land acquisition for setting up of the smart city at the Indo-Mayanmar border.
It further said that the Government sinister attitude of land acquisition might lead to another "Great June 18 Uprising" as livelihoods of the people in the area are dependent on land and forest and taking away their land will have a huge social, cultural, environmental and emotional impact.
TSA also pointed out that any forcible action of the State Government might be a step against productive development and harmonious co- existence, and further requested to set up Smart City where it is required and a transparent way of land acquisition be adopted considering "Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013" .
The students' body also requested the Government to regard and recognize tribal culture, tradition, history and land laws.
