Imphal, September 08 2021:
Maintaining that a government which puts forward the welfare of public would never bring up the proposal of liquor legalisation.
Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) president Hijam Priyokumar said that the move to legalise production of liquor has shown the true motive of the government.
He was attending a public discussion session jointly organised by CADA Thinungei Unit and CADA Bishnupur District Committee at Thinungei in Bishnupur district on Wednesday.
He shared the dais with CADA Bishnupur district committee president Huiningsumbam ong-bi Basanti as presidium members while CADA vice-president Dipanjit Ningthoujam attended as resource person.
Addressing the event, Priyo kumar said that the government should withdraw the Bill to legalise the liquor production in the state.
With diminishing agricultural land area, the food production of the state is also decreasing every year and as a result, 1.54 MT of rice are being imported every year to meet the food demand.
In such a situation, imminent use of paddy rice for liquor brewing will only add to the misery of the state and make the people more dependent on imported goods, he said while calling upon the people of the state to join hands and stand against the Bill, which will severely affect the state.
He also ridiculed the claim of the government that Rs 350 to Rs 400 crore revenues could be generated from legalising liquor brewing in the state by pointing out that a few years back, the same government claimed that Rs 1000 crore revenue could be generated.
