Greylag goose spotted at Tangjeng Lamyaipat

Once found abundantly at Tangjeng Khunjao Lamyaipat during winter months, only a rare migratory bird Greylag goose Ka-nga Khong-wao/Lam Ka-nga) has been spotted this year at the water body.
Speaking to TPC, Thoubal Forest Division honorary wildlife warden Moirangthem Open Meitei informed that as per records in 'Birds of Manipur', Greylag goose were not seen from 1999 to 2012 at Loktak Lake, but in 2013-2014 nine of them were reported from Ngaikhong Khunou.
In 2017, 22 birds arrived at Tangjeng Khunjao Lamyaipat and after remaining absent for few years seven of these birds were again seen in the area in 2022 .
But this year when arrival of migratory birds in the state should be at its peak, only one Greylag goose has been seen at Tangjeng Khunjao Lamyaipat.
If this trend continues the bird may never be encountered again in the state in future, he opined.
M Open further informed that Tangjeng Khunjao Lamyaipat which has been prepared as roosting site for migratory birds saw arrival of two 'Nganu Thanggong' (Ruddy shelduck) on Tuesday, after a gap of two three years.
