Farmers using lesser Quantity of urea: Biswajit

Agriculture minister Th Biswajit Singh has said that farmers of the state have realised the ill-effects of excessive use of chemical fertilizers and insecticides and accordingly reduced use of fertilizers and insecticides on crops.
Minister Biswajit opened an Organic Outlet run by Nahakpam Food and Beverages under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) of the Department of Agriculture, on Wednesday.
Attending as chief guest of the opening function of the Organic Outlet, Th Biswajit said that people across the globe today want to consume chemical-free food for lengthening their life-span and hence, consumption of organic food has become a global trend, a lifestyle practice which has also reached Manipur as could be comprehended from existence of multiple organic outlets in the state.
According to the minister, the state no longer faces scarcity of fertilizer due to systematic distribution by the department and the same is expected in the coming years.
He also informed that the Union agriculture ministry has taken up various programmes to encourage farmers to venture into organic farming, natural farming and use of Nano urea subsequently contributing to significant reduction in use of chemical fertilizers, particularly urea among farmers of the state.
In the past, around 4000 bags of urea were utilised by farmers in Thongju assembly constituency alone but now only around 2,000 bags are needed, he said.
While maintaining that agriculture department has been taking welfare schemes for farmers, minister Biswajit also revealed about a plan to support farmers with Rs 30,000 under the Rainfed Area Development Programme and exhorted the farmers to take advantage of the plan.
The opening function of the Organic Outlet was also attended by Wangkhei MLA Th Arunkumar, Agriculture commissioner RK Dinesh and director Sairem Donald.
