Thoubal, February 04 2025:
With the Thoubal Tomjing Water Supply Scheme suspending supply of potable water to the public since January 15, areas covered by the scheme are facing serious water shortage.
The residents of Thoubal Achouba, including those 6f Kshetri Leikai and Athokpam, have been facing water shortage, due to drying up of rivers and lakes at a rapid pace, with the situation getting further aggravated owing to cessation of operation of the Tomjing Scheme.
When enquired about the water shortage, officials of PHED Thoubal Division informed that the Tomjing Scheme's reservoir is in need of urgent repairing, consequently entailing suspension of supply.
The repair process is expected to take about six months.
With no alternative water sources available, the scheme will be unable to supply water to the public for the said period, according to the Division.
Thoubal Tomjing Water Supply Scheme which began supplying of drinking water in 1982 is the oldest water supply scheme in the district.
However, despite the central government's ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide tap water to every household by 2024, the mission has not been fully implemented in Thoubal district.
Notably, no measures have been taken to provide tap water to areas such as Thoubal Wangmataba Sorok Mathak-Makha, Okram, Mayai Leikai, Bamon Leirak, and Nongangkhong, which fall under Thoubal district headquarters.
Furthermore, construction of overhead water tanks under various schemes remain incomplete, thereby compounding problem of water supply.
