Imphal, October 03 2024:
Comprehensive Concept School's physical education lecturer S Dhanabir Mangang has urged authorities concerned including the minister to fill the vacant posts in the departments of education and Youth Affairs and Sports through prompt and fair process.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, Dhanabir said he had submitted an RTI addressed to the Education (S) Department in connection with physical education evoking satisfactory response.
However, as a similar RTI submitted in respect of Youth Affairs and Sports generated no feedback, the matter was placed before the higher authority following which the answer was received, elaborated the lecturer.
He informed that as per the reply received, Recruitment Rule Serial No.10 for both graduate Physical Education Teachers (PETs) and lecturer PETs specified "100 per cent by promotion failing which by direct recruitment" .
As the recruitment rules imply that majority of positions are reserved for in-service PETs, while trained as well as those pursuing BPEd, MPEd or equivalent degrees with the hope of becoming PETs are systematically excluded from consideration.
Such promotion-based recruitment directly harms those who are professionally trained in physical education.
These students, who have invested time and effort in acquiring specialised degrees, find themselves side lined considering the fact that the recruitment system is technically for in-service employees, effectively blocking the entry of fresh talent and qualified professionals into the workforce, he maintained.
Dhanabir further said that officials of Education and Youth Affairs and Sports departments, as well as the minister concerned, should conduct all recruitment processes fairly.
He noted that while there are no calls for Physical Education teachers in government schools, there are openings in private schools.
Just as respect is shown to athletes, equal opportunities should also be provided to those pursuing careers in physical education, Dhanabir emphasised.
