Imphal, July 03 2022:
The week-long training programme on 'Cultivation, primary processing and value addition of medicinal and aromatic plants', which was jointly organised by MSME Technology Centre, Imphal and Life Sciences (botany) Department of Manipur University concluded on Saturday.
The valedictory programme held at the Department was attended by MU dean professor R Bharatharanjan as chief guest and former dean of life sciences professor GA Shantibala Devi as president while MSME Technology Centre (imphal) deputy director Dr Sinam Yoirentomba Meetei and Department of Life Sciences botany) head professor M Dayamanti were present as guests of honour.
In his speech, Dr Sinam Yoirentomba said that entire North East region except some parts of Assam falls under Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot and many medicinal and aromatic plants grow in this region.
However, question still arises as to how far these medicinal and aromatic plants are being tapped or whether people of the region utilise the rich bio-resources in sustainable or profitable way.
Carelessness, lack of technical knowledge and facility are main reasons for improper tapping of rich bio-resources of the region.
However, MSME Technology Centre at Nilakuthi has been working at the forefront of tapping the rich bio-resources and the centre is providing employment opportunities through agro-technology, processing, quality assessment, value addition and market linkage, he added.
With the completion of the training programme, 'One student one tree' campaign was launched with plantation of lemongrass, agarwood and sandalwood saplings under the aegis Rehul Perfumes inside the MU campus.
