18th Shumang Leela Festival concludes

The 18th Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei organised by Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC) as part of celebrating 75 years of Indian independence concluded at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, here on Monday.
Forest and environment minister Th Biswajit, Hiyanglam MLA Dr Yumnam Radheshyam and MSSLC president M Purnimashi attended the closing ceremony as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, minister.
Biswajit called for promoting art, culture, identity of the state while reminding all concerned that no outsiders will stand up for the cause.
Shumang Leela is said to be born out of the Laj Haraoba festival.
Unfortunately, the art form, which is also considered as a traditional form of theatre, is losing popularity today, he lamented.
Hailing contribution of Shumang Leela in moulding the society, the minister assured of expediting CMHT registration for Shumang Leela artistes.
Dr Radheshyam said that Shumang Leela is a traditional performing art form which has close bonding with the public.
It is not only a means of entertainment but also a medium for social reformation through its messages and awareness on various issues including social, political and economic issues, he said and hailed MSSLC for its contribution towards promotion of the art form.
Lamjingba Artistes Association's 'Cheirak' was performed during the closing ceremony of the festival, which is usually held during the winter but got delayed due to various reasons, including outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
