Imphal, December 29 2021:
Expressing concern over the rising qases of election related violence, which have even claimed one life and left many injured, former chief minister Okram Ibobi has called upon all concerned to exercise restraint and prevent unwanted incidents.
He was attending the 165th birth anniversary of Bir Tikendrajit organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee at Congress Bha-wan here on Wednesday.
Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of the patriot, who stood against the British Empire, on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, the CLP leader affirmed that the Congress party does not believe in violence.
Election is a platform for democracy and the party upholds peaceful and democratic process of election.
Unfortunately, unlike any other past elections, poll related violence are increasing in the state as the 2022 state assembly election draws closer and the party strongly condemns such act of violence.
Let the public choose their candidates and political party to form the government.
There is no reason to involve in violent activities, he said.
Regarding the upsurge of Omicron variant of Covid-19 and upcoming election, Ibobi said that Congress party is not the authority to decide on conducting the election or not.
At the same time, conducting election is constitutionally mandatory.
Unless there is restrictions in movement of voters or unforeseen natural calamities, there is less chances of postponing the election.
As per understanding of the party, it is unlikely for the Election Commission to defer the election.
The EC will definitely assess the situation and take the right decision, he said.
MPCC president N Loken, AICC CWC member Gaikhangam and other party leaders and workers were also present during the observance.
