House condoles ex-Governor, members; crisis victims

On the first day of the 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which commenced on Wednesday, the House condoled the untimely demise of former Governor PB Acharya, 10 former members and a former secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Members cutting across party lines expressed their deepest and profound sorrow over the demise of PB Acharya, former members and former secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly and observed two minutes' silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
Apart from Acharya, the House condoled demise of former MLAs Chungkhokai Doungel (Saikul AC), Meinam Nilachandra (Mayang Imphal), RK Thekho (Mao), RV Mingthing (Chingai), Konsam Tomba (Khundrakpam), Konthoujam Sharat (Konthoujam), Tongbram Mangibabu (Thanga), Ningthoujam Bihari (Khurai), Salam Gopal (Moirang), and Daisin Pamei (Tamenglong), and former secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly Ningthoujam Hera Singh.
Moving the obituary reference, leader of the House N Biren Singh termed the untimely demise of former Governor PB Acharya, former members and the former secretary as an irreparable loss for the state.
He remembered PB Acharya as a statesman who worked to bridge the gap between the people of North East and mainland India.
Later, N Biren also moved a separate obituary reference on the demise of innocent civilians and security personnel in the ongoing violence, which the members endorsed and observed two minutes' silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
Moving the motion, CM Biren acknowledged that since outbreak of the ethnic violence on May 3 last year, many people have lost their lives and serious inconveniences caused to many.
In addition, a number of security personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty for protecting their motherland, he said.
Supporting the motion, opposition leader MLA O Ibobi Singh said that the May 3 incident will be written in the history of Manipur as the most unfortunate day, while stressing the need for all to strive for return of peace and harmony in the state and restore the age-old camaraderie among the different communities.
He also called upon all concerned to forget the past and ensure that no such unwanted incidents recur in the future.
While sharing the grief and sorrow of the bereaved family members, Speaker Th Satyabrata prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace in the heavenly abode.
MLA Th Lokeshwore also joined in sharing the loss and sorrow of the bereaved family members.
Ministers Govindas Konthoujam, Dr Sapam Ranjan, and L Susindro Meitei, MLAs K Robindro, T Robindro, Th Shanti, Ram Muivah, Th Lokeshwar and Janghemlung Panmei also conveyed their condolences.
