Sanajaoba calls for safeguard of Meetei identity

Expressing concern over the uncertain fate of Meetei community, titular king and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has stressed the need for concerted efforts to protect the identity of the community.
He made the remark during the inauguration function of new Shanglen (shed) of Ima Nongabi at Kabowakching Mungyamba Sabal under Nambol assembly constituency on Saturday.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, the titular king observed how the community is facing challenge to its survival from different fronts including cultural assimilation, drugs and substance abuse among others.
If the same trend persists then the community will face extinction in two or three decades' time, he said while calling for unity and making collective effort for upholding the identity of the community.
Former union minister and Padmashri awardee Thounaojam Chaoba recalled that king Mungyamba used to rule from Kabowakching and stressed the need for protecting and preserving the historical evidence.
He also emphasised on safeguarding the identity, history, origin and civilisation of the community.
Later, Loyalakpa Thou-gal Lup, the organiser of the function, submitted a memorandum to the Rajya Sabha MP requesting for protecting the memorial site of Kind Mungyamba and Ima Nongabi under Historical Monument Act.
Lai Selungba N Ibopishak Mangang, Shija Kunjeshori, caretaker councillor Chandam Bikramjit and Modern Club, Kabowakching president Sanabam Rameshor also attended the function as members of the dais.
