Thoubal, August 25 2024:
Incessant rainfall in the last few days and rising waterlevel of rivers caused overflow of the Ekop Pat consequently inundating many homes and fish farms in Leishangthem Khong Manung Makha Leikai.
Speaking to media persons in connection with the deluge, Leishangthem Apun-ba Lup (LAL) legal advisor Keisam Priyobarta informed that the flood water has affected around 200 houses and damaged same number of fish farms in Leishangthem Khong Manung Makha Leikai.
Mentioning that except for setting up of a relief camp the government has not provided any notable assistance, he appealed to the government to offer some monetary aid through State Disaster Respond Fund.
Priyobarta also noted that though officials from District Fisheries Office and the district administration inspected the flood affected areas, so far no satisfactory support has been provided.
Pointing out many fish farmers, who have procured loans under government schemes as well as spending hard-saved money in fish farming are among the flood affected people, he suggested that the government provide financial assistance when they are in dire need of the same rather than extending help when the situation improves.
Meanwhile, expressing gratitude to the local MLA for providing potable water and other necessities, Priyobarta urged the government to look into matter earnestly and help the affected people and fish farmers.
On the other hand, Leishangthem Khong Manung Makha Leikai Meira Paibi secretary Keisam Yaiphabi expressed strong resentment that at a time when the villagers are taking shelter in a relief camp as their homes have almost been completely submerged by flood water, there are many who come for sightseeing.
Though it is appreciable if the visitors intend to purchase fish from the affected farmers it is not the time for merriment when the locals are suffering untold miseries, she stressed.
