House condoles landslide victims

The Manipur Legislative Assembly today condoled the victims of the Marangching and Pherzawl landslides as well as former Member Yengkhom Thambal who was elected from Kakching AC.
The Members of the House observed silence for two minutes in honour of the departed souls.
Agriculture Minister Th Biswajit who is currently in charge as Chief Minister remarked that late Yengkhom Thambal was a distinguished leader who always remained calm and focused in his works.
Y Thambal who was 94 when he expired joined the Socialist Party of India in 1974 and went on to become the president of the party's State unit.
He was imprisoned four times during Emergency and the movement for Statehood, Biswajit recalled.
He was elected to the 4th Manipur Legislative Assembly as an Independent candidate.
He took active roles in different issues and contributed a lot for the development of the State, he remarked.
Conveying solidarity to the bereaved family, Biswajit prayed that the departed soul may rest in peace in the heavenly abode.
He also condoled the death of 58 persons in the tragic landslide which occurred at Marangching in the intervening night of June 29 and 30 and also the two persons who were killed by another landslide on July 7 in Pherzawl district.
On the next morning of the tragic landslide which struck Marangching, Government machinery, NDRF, SDRF, army, focal volunteers and civil organisations launched intensive search and rescue operations and it went on till July 20.In the meantime, Chief Minister N Biren personally visited the landslide affected area and supervised the search operations, Biswajit said.
Altogether 18 victims were rescued while three are still missing.
The Government has already paid ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the families of each deceased victim while the injured victims have been given Rs 50,000 each.
Conveying solidarity to all the families of the deceased victims, the Agriculture Minister prayed for speedy recovery of the injured victims.
Opposition leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi remarked that late Yengkhom Thambal was always calm and composed and he believed in socialist ideology.
The State has lost a noted social worker in the death of Y Thambal, Ibobi said.
He also conveyed solidarity to the family of Y Thambal and all the families of those people killed by the two landslides.
Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai, MLAs Kh Joykisan, M Rameshwar and Speaker Th Satyabrata too prayed that the departed souls may rest in peace in the heavenly abode.
