Imphal, January 25 2025:
As the country observes 76th Republic Day, the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) has strongly criticised the celebration in the state, highlighting the ongoing crisis that has plagued the state since May 3, 2023 .
MIYC stated that the festivities are hollow and meaningless against the backdrop of persistent violence, devastation, and displacement affecting thousands of indigenous communities in the state.
According to a statement of MIYC, the crisis has been marked by targeted attacks on a specific community with genocidal intent.
It alleged the use of sophisticated weaponry and weaponised drones by Kuki armed groups, leading to widespread destruction of infrastructure and human settlements.
These assaults have forced over 60,000 people into relief camps, where they endure deplorable conditions and face an uncertain future.
The lack of adequate support and a concrete rehabilitation plan has further deepened the resentment of the displaced families.
MIYC also pointed to the complicity or inaction of security forces, accusing them of giving a tacit free hand to Kuki militant factions, which has exacerbated the situation.
The ongoing violence has caused severe trauma, with reports of suicides among relief camp inmates and continued insecurity among the affected communities.
Adding to the anguish is the mysterious disappearance of Kamalbabu from the heavily secured Leimakhong Army camp, which has sparked widespread protests and questions over security lapses.
MIYC condemned the observance of Republic Day in the state, calling it inappropriate and insensitive to the suffering of the people.
It urged the government to shift its focus from ceremonial celebrations to addressing the pressing issues, including restoring peace, ensuring justice for the victims, and rebuilding trust among the state's diverse communities.
MIYC emphasised that the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, which the Republic Day embodies, remain overshadowed by violence and despair in the state.
Until tangible actions are taken to resolve the crisis, the celebrations will continue to serve as a stark reminder of unfulfilled promises and neglected responsibilities, it added.
