Firemen protest assault, to cease service

Condemning the as-sault by 16 Jat Regiment on personnel of Manipur Fire Service who had rushed to contain the ablaze in New Checkon in Imphal East on Monday, Manipur Fire Service personnel staged a protest demonstration at the gate of Manipur Fire Depart-ment near Imphal Kangjei-bung, on Tuesday.
They also resolved to cease work till the 16 Jat Regiment personnel involved in the assault are suspended.
Speaking to media per-sons on the side-lines of the protest, sub-officer S Jivan recounted that a team of Ma-nipur Fires Service received information from Imphal East control room about torching of some houses near Remedy Hospital, Palace Gate and rushed there to control inferno.
As the mob went wild, the security personnel deployed in the area opened fire to control the mob.
As the firemen were hying to douse off the fire, 16 Jat Regiment personnel started to assault the fire fighters in-spite of being well aware that they are fire service per-sonnel, he said and added that if uniformed fire service personnel could be assault-ed in such a manner by the central forces, the matter would be worse in the case of civilians.
He further informed that a team of the 16 Jat Regiment led by a major came to the department and said that it was a mistake while assur-ing to initiate action against the personnel involved in the incident.
However, the fire service team refused to come in terms with the cen-tral forces until the 16 Jat Regiment personnel involved in assaulting the fire-fighters are suspended.
He also reiterated tha� the fire fighters will cease all emergency engagements including outbreak of fire.
