Imphal, November 18 2023:
Centre for Women Development (CWD) and National Mental Health Program, NHM jointly organised a one-day awareness programme on 'Day care centre for the severe mentally ill persons' under PPP model, at CWD's office, Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai, here, on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, National Mental Health Programme, NHM Manipur state nodal officer Dr Athokpam Ranita observed that family members often face a hard time in accompanying and taking care of their mentally ill relatives, after the latter are discharged from the hospital upon recovery.
Such situation sometimes leads to further deterioration of the patients' condition.
If family members cannot care for their sick relatives, they can place them at the Day care centre for the severe mentally ill people opened under NHM, for continuation of treatment.
She informed that in addition to providing training age-appropriate exercise at the centre; training on handicrafts, and counselling and rehabilitation to maintain positive mentality are provided to the patients along with similar facilities available at rehabilitation centres.
However, cooperation from the family members or dear ones of the patients suffering from such sensitive ailments, play a critical role in the patients' recovery, she asserted.
In her speech, CWD president N Jeevanmala remarked that almost everyone has mental illness in this day and age.
CWD has been working to provide rehabilitation to recovered mental patients under the supervision of NHM.
The centre aims to make the patients' stay at the centre happier through yoga therapy, vocational training, acupuncture therapy and other treatments, she added.
The programme was also attended NCD SNO Dr Y Prem-chandra, Public Health retired senior specialist Dr H Ibemcha and NHM, Manipur clinical psychologist M Herojit as members on the dais.
