Slain former soldier laid to rest

Mortal remains of Limkholal Mate, a former havaldar of Assam Regiment's mechanised infantry, were laid to rest on Wednesday at the Kuki-Zo Martyrs' Cemetery, Phaijang village in Kangpokpi district.
Limkholal, who hailed from Motbung Saron Veng in Sadar Hills, was abducted on September 7 by unknown persons suspected to belong to the Meetei community, after purchasing medicine for his ailing wife and hardware supplies.
The next morning, his lifeless body was found lying in a pool of blood in a field which falls under the jurisdiction of Sekmai police station in Imphal West district with tell-tale signs of severe thrashing.
The tragic incident has left the Kuki-Zo community in shock, with demands for justice intensifying as Limkholal's family and community members paid their last respects.
The burial programme organised by the Committee on Tribal Unity, Sadar Hills, under the theme, "You Sacrifice Your Today for Our Tomorrow" had Rev Larnsat Lhouvum leading hundreds of Kuki-Zo community, along with his family, friends, and loved ones, in mourning and honouring the former soldier.
Kuki-Zo volunteers paid tribute with a ceremonial salute during the condolence service, honouring Limkholal's commitment and sacrifice.
His son, Thangminlun Mate, who aspires to follow in his father's footsteps in the Indian Army, said, "Despite all the hardships, I find comfort and feel better knowing my father received the honourable burial he truly deserved".
In a heart-wrenching moment, the BA student stood by his father's grave, overwhelmed with emotion and thanked his father for being a towering inspiration in his life and expressed deep pride in having such a remarkable man as his father.
"My father was a devoted soldier who served with honour and dedication.
It is heartbreaking to see his life end in such a brutal manner.
I urge the government to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for his death are held accountable," said Thangminlun.
He also called on the nation to acknowledge and honour his father's contributions and sacrifices for the country.
