Meet stresses stricter PC-PNDT Act monitoring

Imphal, February 18 2025:
A joint meeting of the State Advisory Committee (SAC), State Appropriate Authority (SAA), and the State PC-PNDT Cell was held at the office of Directorate of Family Welfare Services on Tuesday to discuss gender discrimination and the role of the PC-PNDT programme in improving the state's sex ratio.
Chairing the meeting, Family Welfare Services director Dr N Hemantakumar Singh, emphasised the need to examine potential violations of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act oh e-commerce platforms and social networking sites within the state.

He further underscored the necessity of establishing advisory measures or regulations to address such violations along with highlighting that Section 22 of the PC-PNDT Act, 1994, explicitly prohibits advertisements related to sex determination.
The director also stressed the importance of interdepartmental collaboration to support initiatives that provide benefits and incen tives for the welfare of the girl child.
During the meeting, PC-PNDT state nodal officer Dr Sujata Huidrom, presented an overview of activities undertaken across all districts over the past three months, including conduct of district-level meetings, awareness workshops on the PC-PNDT Act and gender discrimination, sensitization programmes, and state-level training sessions for public prosecutors.
In her address, Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) joint director Tenshubam Sangeeta, noted that district information offices have been actively disseminating information through press releases about various government programmes, including awareness initiatives on the PC-PNDT Act and gender discrimination.
The PC-PNDT Act serves as a legal framework to safeguard the girl child by penalising those indulging in sex determination and to serve as a deterrent to others.
