Senapati, May 15 2022:
At exactly the same spot, where a loaded truck met with an accident on May 12 killing both the driver and the handyman, another truck skidded off the road and fell into Likhuri river which is located between Makhan and Chakumai villages under Mao police station in Senapati district around 6.30 am on Sunday.
One occupant of the truck (NL01N 3262) loaded with FCI rice heading towards Imphal from Dimapur died at the spot while another suffered injuries.
Identities of both could not be ascertained till the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, a lightning indefinite bandh was called along Imphal-Dimapur road by different organisations of the area led by Mao Youth Organisation but the agitation was called after intervention by local MLAs N Kayisii and Losii Dikho.
Briefing the media about the bandh, Mao Youth Organisation spokesperson Kaisii Arche said that the bandh was called by Mao Students' Union, Senapati Trucks Union, Senapati District Truck Owners' Association, Surface Hill Area Drivers' Welfare Union Manipur, Senapati District Welfare Union, Makhan Union, All Makhan Youth Organisations, Chakumai Khridziiphi Union and National highway-2 Action Committee.
However, the bandh was lifted following the assurance given by MLAs N Kayisii and Losii Dikho who visited the spot and assured of looking into the matter and improve the road condition.
However, the organisations would resume the bandh/economic blockade if the government fails to take any positive action in the com ing few days, he warned and appealed to government and NHIDCL to resolve the matter at the earliest.
He also said that the bridge over Likhuri river is too narrow and many precious lives have been lost in the past at this particular area.
On the other hand, Tadubi MLA N Kayisii appealed to state government to look into the matter urgently while maintaining that Likhuri river bridge has become accident prone zone.
According to Mao MLA Losii Dikho, the department concerned and NHIDCL need to take immediate action particularly with regard to the narrowness and weakness of the bridge.
The road between Mao gate and Tadubi is comparatively better and lesser road accidents happen but the neglected portions like Likhuri bridge area have become accident prone, he noted, adding that Mao Gate-Makhan village stretch needs to be maintained properly especially in risky areas.
