Imphal, August 11 2022:
Like every year, Coalition for Indigenes' Rights Campaign (CIRCA), Manipur will observe the Manipur Independence Day (76th) on August 14 to commemorate the day Manipur regained independence from British colonial rule, and urged the people to hoist the 'Malem Puba Pakhangba' flag.
In a release, CIRCA president Somorendro Thokchom recalled that Manipur was under British rule after losing in the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War and granted independence on August 14, 1947 .
After becoming an independent nation, the then king first hoisted Malem Puba Pakhangba flag at Sana Konung (royal palace) durbar hall.
After regaining the status of an independent sovereign nation, a democratic government was formed with the passing of Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 and election conducted inl948 in which 53 representatives were elected.
However, king Bodhchandra was forced to sign the merger agreement under duress at Shillong on September 21,1947 and it brought about a drastic change in the political status of Manipur.
From being an independent nation, Manipur was reduced to the status of Part-C state of India.
As such, Manipur was forcefully annexed by India after being freed by British colonial rule, he recounted.
Since the inception of CIRCA in 2015, it started launching awakening campaign to attain pre-merger political status from September of the same year and further organised campaigns against merger agreement such as 'Merger Agreement ki Mayokta Leiba Tha' and 'Warepnaba Khongjang'.
It continued to organ ise September 21 annually as 'National Repentance Day' in remembrance of the day the merger agreement was signed and October 18 as 'Manipur National Day' to commemorate the first state assembly session of Manipur held on October 18, 1948.While informing that CIRCA will observe the 76th Manipur Independence Day, he urged localities, villages, school and colleges to observe the significant day when Manipur attained independence and hoisted Malem Puba Pakhangba flag.
