Imphal, July 11 2024:
Veterinary & Animal Husbandry minister Khashim Vashum has said that survival of the Veterinary Department lies at the hands of the staff and they should never undermine the fact that many farmers are rearing animals for sustenance.
Minister Khasim shared his opinion during the handing over ceremony of 33 veterinary ambulances to different districts under the Health and Diseases Control Programme of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department launched by chief minister N Biren on Thursday.
The minister also distributed livestock insurance certificates to the beneficiary farmers during the event held at the training hall of the Department in Sanjenthong, here.
Addressing the gathering, minister Khasim Vashum said that the department is taking up various programmes for the welfare of the people particularly the farmers and this must be understood collectively.
The department has started taking up many flagship programmes of the Centre but successful implementation of the same shall depend on effort and sincerity of officers at the district level, he said and appealed to officers to strive for reaping fruit of these programmes and as service to the farmers.
He also expressed that the mobile veterinary ambulance distributed Thursday will help in treatment of animal afflict ed by different diseases in far flung areas.
According to minister Khasim Vashum, the department was unable to initiate livestock insurance for a long time till implementation of the same in the state following outbreak of incidents of livestock epidemic.
However, farmers in Manipur still seem to be unaware about such a scheme and the fact that they have to contribute only 20 percent of the insured amount to avail benefit.
They must understand that 50 percent of the insurance will be borne by the Centre and 30 percent by the state government with the rest contributed by the farmer concerned, he explained, while encouraging farmers to join the scheme to recover from losses at the time of epidemic or death of livestock.
Meanwhile, director (veterinary) Dr RK Khogendrajit said that the mobile veterinary ambulances were distributed based on size of population of the districts while 175 farmers who applied for livestock insurance are provided certificates and insurance amount.
