Imphal, December 08 2024:
Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM) convened its 6 th Loumeeshingi Poinu Meepham at JN Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal on Sunday.
The function was attended by IFM president Gopen Luwang, agriculture director N Gojen-dro, environment and climate change director T Brajakumar and MOVCD-NER project director Kh Nimaichand as presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, Gopen Luwang said that the farming community in the state is risking their lives to ensure self-sufficiency in food production, despite the frequent attacks by armed Kuki-Zo militants targeting the Meetei community with sophisticated weapons.
He said that the farmers, who are tirelessly producing food and grains for the people, are the true heroes of the state.
As long as these "heroes" continue their efforts, no one can bring Manipur down, he said.
Gojendro highlighted that the agriculture department is implementing various welfare programmes and schemes aimed at supporting the farming community.
He pointed out that a significant portion of the state's population, approximately 60 to 80 per cent, rely on agriculture for their livelihood.
However, due to the large number of farmers, it is challenging for the government's welfare schemes to reach every farmer.
He explained that the government provides essential farming equipment at a 40 per cent subsidised rate, benefiting farmers through a selection process where beneficiaries are recommended by the DCs with the department having no direct involvement in the recommendations.
Gojendro also assured that there is an adequate supply of fertilisers, and that the agriculture department's office remains open for farmers
to access them.
