Imphal, September 08 2022:
Dhanamanjuri University Vice Chancellor Prof N Rajmuhon Singh has stated that westernisation or modernisation and absence of quality education have widened the chasm between the teachers and students.
He made the statement while speaking as chief guest of the Teachers' Day celebration organised by IQAC of DM College of Science, NSS and students, at the central hall of the college on Thursday.
Prof Rajmuhon said that there is a need to change the value system to ensure quality education.
If education were to encompass human values, moral values and spiritual values, it is easy to bring about quality education and further help restore the good teacher student relationship of the old times.
Thus, National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 gives emphasis on adherence to national ethos and aesthetic values.
If this were to be implemented, the teacher-student relationship will be restored, he stated, while adding that no matter how famous or successful a person is, he/she has had a good teacher to guide them.
"As long as the teacher-student relationship is maintained well, both the teacher and student will achieve success in life, he contended.
The VC then said that around 50-60 percent of the global population consists of students and youth.
If they were to stay healthy, be knowledgeable and become capable citizens, then the world will achieve the goal of sustainable development.
In the context of India and also locally, the roles of youth and students are important.
As such, the teachers play a key role in shaping and guiding the future pillars of society, he asserted.
Regarding the Teachers' Day celebration, Prof Rajmuhon recounted that Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had urged for his birthday on September 5 to be celebrated as Teachers' Day.
Dr Radhakrishnan was a good, multi faceted, the first Vice President and a two-time President of India, in addition to being a pioneer of philosophical sciences.
He (Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan) stated that the establishment of any science building should have a religious foundation.
The VC continued that the role of teachers in the 21st century has become increasingly important, as the most important resource now is human resource/ human capital and the most important capital resource is time.
As such, education is of great significance in this era since it is the key to the main gate of modernisation and civilisation.
Thus, teachers are the role models in building the education system of a nation right from the classrooms, he said, while adding that teachers are human engi neers.
The celebration was also attended by DM College of Science ex-principals Dr E Jadu Singh and Dr N Ibotombi; DM College of Science principal Dr M Bhubaneshwari Devi and Department of Zoology, DM Science HOD Dr L Hemchandra Singh as presidium members.
During the function, Dr L Hemchandra spoke on National Education Policy 2020, which was followed by presentation of simple gifts to 8 teachers who will be retiring within a year.
