Environment Day: Global warming discussed, trees planted

District Health Society, Thoubal observed World Environment Day 2022 at its conference Hall on the theme "Only One Earth, Let's take Care of it" on Wednesday with chief medical officer, Thoubal Dr Y Nokul Singh as chief guest, DPM, Thoubal Ch Basanta Singh as functional president and CMHA assistant nodal officer Dr M Rakhesh Meetei guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Y Nokul highlighted the importance,of tree plantation at maximum level and rejuvenation of catchment areas.
He also appealed to officials of district's healthcare centres present at the observance to plant trees including fruit bearing trees at the surrounding of their Health Wellness Centres.
As a part of the observance, Dr M Rakhesh deliberated on effect of climate change on human kind and inferred that increasing number of women in the reproductive age group undergoing IVF treatment and cases of non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, stroke and Cancer cases are directly or indirectly connected to degeneration of the environment.
These health issues can be easily prevented by changing the lifestyle, he stressed and appealed to the participants to adopt renewable source of energy.
Later, the CMO launched plantation of fruit bearing trees which will also be carried out at Health and Wellness Centres in the district during the entire month.
Meanwhile, Modi Battalion of IGAR (S) along with Chandel district police and civil administration organised a trey plantation drive on Tuesday in and around sports complex of Chandel Christian & Theological College at Modi village.
The plantation drive was participated by nearly 100 persons including forest department, civil wing of Royal Riders Chandel, locals and other government employees.
Chandel DC Mayanglangbam Rajkumar; Chandel DFO Vijay; Chandel SP PH Mahesh Naraian, DIET Chandel principal HB Thanison, social worker HL Lovingson and personnel of 8 Manipur Rifles Leikun and 21 AR also took part in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Royal Riders chief Kothyedawri Khaling informed that the trees were being planted in support of the target set by the CM to plant 75,000 saplings by August and also as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
He then stressed the need for protecting the forests for maintaining ecological balance.
As a part of Environment World Environment Day observance, Keithelmanbi Battalion of IGAR (S) conducted a Cycle Rally from Nambol to Loktak, Bishnupur district on June 5, which was attended by education minister Th Basanta Singh, Bishnupur DC and SP Bishnupur, and over 150 local youths.
Keithelmanbi Battalion of IGAR (S) also organised a Tree Plantation Drive in Bishnupur district Wednesday during which Assam Rifles troops distributed and planted around 200 saplings of multiple varieties at Heinoubok and Leimaram villages to achieve dual purpose of environment protection and Soil conservation.
