Petroleum transporters call off strike after MoU with Govt

The strike called by petroleum transporters has been called off from Monday following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Core Committee: Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Products Transporter Fraternity, Retail Outlet Dealers, LPG Distributors, and Drivers Association with the state government on Sunday after extensive discussions between the two parties.
As per the agreement, supply of petrol and diesel from Malom Depot, along with LPG supplies from the Sekmai bottling plant, resumed from Monday.
Additionally, transportation of petroleum products along the Imphal-Jiribam stretch of the National Highway 37 will resume from Tuesday, The strike has been called off after addressing a wide range of issues, including conditions laid out as part of the MoU.
One of the key points agreed upon is that the government will hold talks with underground groups under peace agreement with the Government of India to put an end to extortions and illegal taxes on NH 37, which the Core Committee will monitor the progress on a daily basis and schedule review of the developments on August 17 .
However, they cautioned that in case the terms of agreement are not adhered to or progress unsatisfactory at any point of time, then the strike will be re-launched.
The meeting was chaired by chief minister N Biren in the presence of security advisor, chief secretary in-charge, ADGP (Intelligence), ADGP (Law & Order), and representatives of the Core Committee.
As per the MoU, the state government will strengthen security arrangements for the protection and movement of petroleum products and tankers along NH 37; strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and set up a control room for monitoring under the command of a senior police officer of DIG rank to ensure round-the-clock security; periodically review the SOPs to ensure accountability and responsibility, with appropriate action taken against those found culpable; adopt necessary measures to stop extortions by underground elements and miscreants, including holding talks with underground groups under peace negotiations; address the issue of improving condition of NH 37 by working with NHIDCL/PWD to ensure the road is suitable for movement as soon as possible; and hold separate meeting with the dealers and distributors of petroleum products to address their specific issues.
Moreover, as a component of the MoU, drivers who suffered injuries in the April 16 incident will be considered for suitable government jobs according to nature of their injuries and qualifications.
