Imphal, July 03 2013:
Meetei Mayek activists attacked a shopping centre, which was inaugurated today, for not inscribing backdrop of the signboard with the indigenous script (Meetei Mayek) .
Even as inauguration of LG Shoppe was underway at Khoyathong this morning MEELAL activists arrived at the scene and pulling down the signboard set it on fire.
Claiming involvement of its activists in the incident, MEELAL president Sadokpam Tomba Mangang strongly criticised the shopping centre management for ignoring repeated reminders by the script campaigners to include the indigenous script at a visible spot.
Informing that MEELAL had been campaigning for the past 10 years to promote the indigenous script with the support of the masses, he opined that LG Shoppe not including Meetei Mayek in the signboard is an affront to the ongoing movement.
Regretting that certain section of the society is yet to acknowledge importance of safeguarding and promoting the indigenous script, Tomba wondered why LG Shoppe defied the movement when almost every shops, newspapers and vehicles have responded positively to the campaign.
LG Shoppe owned by one Thangjam Miren was inaugurated by Paediatrician Dr Thangjam Nabachandra.
