World No Tobacco Day observed in state

Conduct of awareness programmes and discourse on the harmful effect of tobacco marked the World No Tobacco Day observance held in different parts of the state on Monday.
At Manipur University, the observance was organised at the office of its Vice-Chancellor by Fit India Campaign Committee & Fit India Club (FICC & FIC), MU.
In a statement, FICC & FIC convenor Dr L Santosh Singh informed that the observance was organised in pursuance of directive of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
It said that a pledge was taken both in Hindi and English languages for no tobacco use led by varsity VC in-charge Prof S Sanatombi Singha and attended by registrar Prof W Chandbabu Singh and all stakeholder of Manipur University communities - dean Students' Welfare MU and chairman Fit India Club MU Dr L Bishwanath Sharma, Covid-19 Monitoring Task Force MU chairman Prof N Mohilal Meitei, MUTA general secretary Dr S Santikumar Singh, MUSA president S Brojen Singh, MUSU general secretary K Nareshkumar Singh and other members of FICC and FIC, MU.
On the other hand, observing the World No Tobacco Day, 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sect AR organised a webinar with students of Tamenglong under the theme 'Quit Smoking', said a release by PIB (Defence Wing).
During the webinar, the correlation between Covid-19 and smoking was stressed as both attack the lungs directly.
The need to quit smoking and habits required to quit smoking for a healthier lifestyle were also discussed.
The unit medical staff, speaking on the occasion highlighted suggestions needed to achieve smoking cessation.
He said that fixing a date and setting a day to be completely free from the habit of smoking will help one gradually decrease smoking and reach the goal.
This way it would help the body adjust to the new normal, he said.
To further subdue the urge to smoke, he suggested taking some healthy snack or nicotine gums or even sugarless chewing gums.
"One should have a support system instead of struggling on your own.
Constant reminders from them can motivate a person to beat the urge.
The urge to smoke is more when under stress so, try some calming techniques such as listening to relaxing music, breathing exercises, massage, meditation or even closing your eyes.
Focus on rewards of quitting and you would succeed," he said.
Tamenglong Battalion commandant also released an e-brochure on "No Tobacco Day" on the occasion.
Sharing the brochure with the participants, he urged all to spread awareness about Tobacco cessation and its benefits during ongoing COVID pandemic.
Applauding the contribution of various CSOs and youth leaders in the ongoing 3rd phase of vaccination drive, he also requested public to follow protocols at COVID care centres and get themselves vaccinated at the earliest.
To further spread Covid awareness among people from far flung, remote villages of Tousem sub division, the unit vehicle based teams spread the message in Azuiram, Thiullon, Phillong and Namtiram villages before hitting back to the town.
