Imphal, December 30 2021:
Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary Sobita Mangsatabam has remarked that rising cases of crime against women and children is due to the delayed action of the authorities concerned.
Addressing a press meet held at WAD office on Thursday, Sobita said that there is an increasing need to divide the state police, with One group assigned for investigating cases and the other for VIP duty.
The government has been reminded multiple times of the same but no action has been taken up till date, she added.
Contending that the rise in crime against women and children in the state is due to lack of proper investigation and low conviction rate, the WAD secretary pointed out that the IOs who are supposed to investigate the cases are assigned for VIP duty, thus delaying the investigation process.
She questioned whether the police are meant to protect the people or the VIPs.
In addition, the delay in taking prompt action with regard to missing person reports has often caused the police to miss the golden opportunity of rescuing the victims and thus finding the dead bodies of the victims instead.
However, there is no delay when arresting someone who has made dissenting remarks against a VIP on social media platforms, she remarked.
Hoping for the government to be more citizen-centric, Sobita further urged for taking up necessary action to prevent crimes against women and children.
A DNA testing machine could be set up in the state to aid in the arrest and punishment of culprits involved in such crimes, she suggested, while further urging the authorities to take up strict security measures during the New Year's Eve and New Year celebrations.
