Ukhrul, June 28 2021:
The 10 Sector Assam Rifles on Monday organised a demonstration cum lecture on tree plantation at its headquarters at Somsai in Ukhrul.
Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), Ukhrul Wungrim said that to reverse the depleting forest cover, the forest department is currently concentrating on artificial regeneration of forest by encouraging extensive tree plantation.
"Tree plantation is a preferred option to replenish/ regenerate the forest because it takes a much longer period of time for nature to regenerate the forest on its own," he said.
He also informed that the forest departments across the country are setting a target to fulfil recovery of 33 per cent of the forest covers.
Advising on plantation, Wungrim said that it is always advisable to use indigenously available tree species rather than those brought in from outside.
"Chances of survival of the trees are much higher for local species because they are already adapted to the local climatic conditions," he said.
As part of the demonstration, a plantation event was held wherein he imparted knowledge on digging pits, spacing, removing saplings from polythene, planting and nurturing to the participating personnel from the Assam Rifles.
He further mentioned that a gap of 2.5 metre between tree saplings should be maintained to ensure normal growth of the trees.
The programme was attended by 10 Sector AR officers and personnel and staffers from Ukhrul forest department.
